The Reykjavík Capital Area is the country’s largest and most populated city and currently home to 210.000 people, that’s two-thirds of the entire Icelandic population (2022)!
Although it’s one of the smallest capital cities in the world, it’s still big enough to fit in six super-sized districts, with Reykjavík as the largest having a population of 134.599 people (2022). Each district has its own elected council that governs the community and is responsible for the execution of legally determined projects.
While Reykjavík maintains its small-town feel, it’s still a modern European capital with all the governmental institutions you’d expect to find in a metropolitan city, with the added bonus of having a unique spa and pool culture. Here you’ll discover a thriving culinary scene with many outstanding restaurants, and a diverse cultural life, with a variety of interesting museums, theatres, galleries, sports facilities and some first class universities. So however long you stay, we hope you’ll discover the energy of the capital area and share your adventures with your family and friends!
